Find the tax amount and total cost of any purchase
How Sales Tax Works
Sales tax is a percentage added on top of a purchase price. The rate varies by state and city.
To find the tax amount: multiply the price by the tax rate (as a decimal).
To find the total cost: add the tax to the original price.
Instead of calculating tax and adding it, multiply by (1 + tax rate).
With 8% tax: $50 ร 1.08 = $54.00. Same answer, one step.
This works because you're paying 100% of the price plus 8% tax = 108% total = 1.08.
๐ก Mental math for sales tax: Find 10% of the price (move decimal left), then adjust. For 8% tax, find 10% and subtract 2% (which is 1/5 of 10%). Close enough for quick estimates at the store.
