What is a Percent?

Understand the meaning of percent and how it connects to everyday life

The Word "Percent"

The word percent comes from the Latin per centum, which means "per hundred." The symbol for percent is %.
When we say 25%, we mean 25 out of 100.

That's all a percent is — a number out of 100. It gives us a standard way to describe a part of something, no matter how big or small that something is.

Seeing Percents

Imagine a grid with 100 squares. If you shade 25 of them, you have shaded 25% of the grid.
