How to Convert a Decimal to a Fraction

Use place value to write any decimal as a fraction

The Method

Step 1: Read the decimal using place value — the last digit tells you the denominator.
Step 2: Write it as a fraction.
Step 3: Simplify if possible.

Place Value Determines the Denominator

How It Works
1 decimal place (tenths) → denominator is 10
2 decimal places (hundredths) → denominator is 100
3 decimal places (thousandths) → denominator is 1000

Worked Examples

Example 1: 0.75
2 decimal places → denominator is 100
Write it: 75/100
Simplify: 75 ÷ 25 = 3, 100 ÷ 25 = 4 → 3/4
Example 2: 0.6
1 decimal place → denominator is 10
Write it: 6/10
Simplify: 6 ÷ 2 = 3, 10 ÷ 2 = 5 → 3/5
Example 3: 0.125
3 decimal places → denominator is 1000
Write it: 125/1000
Simplify: 125 ÷ 125 = 1, 1000 ÷ 125 = 8 → 1/8
💡 To simplify: Find the greatest common factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator, and divide both by it.
