To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator (top) by the denominator (bottom).
Decimal = Numerator ÷ Denominator
Examples
Simple Fractions
1/2 → 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5
3/4 → 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
1/5 → 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2
Repeating Decimals
1/3 → 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333… (repeating)
2/3 → 2 ÷ 3 = 0.666… (repeating)
1/6 → 1 ÷ 6 = 0.1666… (repeating)
Some fractions produce decimals that repeat forever. In practice, you can round to 2 or 3 decimal places.
Improper Fractions
When the numerator is larger than the denominator, the decimal will be greater than 1.
Examples
7/4 → 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75
5/2 → 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5
💡 Quick Check: If the fraction is less than 1 (like 3/4), the decimal should be less than 1. If the fraction is greater than 1 (like 7/4), the decimal should be greater than 1.
