How to Convert a Fraction to a Percent

Two methods — pick the one that works best for you

Method 1: The Decimal Method

Step 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal.
Step 2: Multiply the decimal by 100 and add the % sign.
Convert 3/8 to a percent
Divide: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375
Multiply: 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%

Method 2: Scale to 100

If the denominator divides evenly into 100, multiply both top and bottom to make the denominator 100. The numerator is your percent.
Convert 3/5 to a percent
5 × 20 = 100, so multiply both by 20
3 × 20 = 60, 5 × 20 = 100
60/100 = 60%

This method is fastest when the denominator is 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, or 50 — they all divide cleanly into 100.
